At Coal Clough Academy, we offer Key Stage 4 students the opportunity to study the SEG Level 1 in Motor Vehicle Studies. This has been developed to introduce students to the motor vehicle repair industry. Students will complete practical work in our workshop/motor vehicle training area and theory work in the classroom, to develop the knowledge and skills needed to progress in the automotive repair industry.

By studying this course students will;

  • Gain essential knowledge of health and safety in the motor vehicle industry.
  • Gain hands on practical experience working on a variety of motor vehicle systems.
  • Acquire work-related skills with a range of specialist tools and equipment.
  • Develop real employability skills.

To achieve the Level 1 Award, pupils must complete three units:

Unit 1:  Health and Safety: how to work safely in an automotive industry environment.

Unit 2:  Engineering skills: working with metal to make a key ring and pin hammer.

Unit 4:  Engines: how to take a petrol engine apart, put it back together and how it works.

To achieve the Level 1 Certificate, pupils must complete an additional three units:

Unit 8:  Electrical principles: how to make circuits, use a multimeter and work on vehicle battery and lighting systems.

Unit 10: Braking systems: how to check and service disc and drum brake systems.

Unit 11: Vehicle inspection: how to check and service vehicles.

The SEG Level 1 Award in Motor Vehicle Studies supports progression onto motor vehicle diploma qualifications at college.  The qualification is recognised by employers and is useful for students wishing to progress to apprenticeships or employment in the motor vehicle industry. We feel this gives our students the ideal opportunity to develop industry level skills and provides the foundations for a successful career in the motor industry.
